How to Apply for Ohio Food Stamp Benefits

There are three ways you can apply for food stamps in Ohio – online, in-person, and by mail or fax.

Before we cover that, it’s important that you gather all the necessary documents needed to apply for Ohio food stamps.

Here is a list of information and documentation you will need to complete your Ohio SNAP Application:

  • Social Security Number (SSN) or proof that you’ve applied for one
  • Identity and Date of Birth (DOB) such as a Driver’s License or State ID
  • Income information such as pay stubs, tax records, or child support notices
  • Resource or asset information such bank accounts (checking, savings accounts), vehicles, homes, land or life insurance
  • Housing expenses such as rent and utilities
  • Any child care or dependent care costs
  • Child support you pay for children not living with you
  • Medical expenses (including prescriptions) for those with disabilities or 60+ years old
  • Health Insurance information
  • Once you have gathered this information, you can now begin your Ohio Food Stamps Application.

Option 1: Online – Ohio Benefits Website

The first option is to apply online using the Ohio Benefits online portal. You can access the Ohio Benefits website by visiting benefits.ohio.gov.

If this is your first time using Ohio Benefits website, you will first have to create an online account.

What does EBT not cover?

Your Ohio Food Stamps Card can not be used to purchase any hot or prepared food item, as well as any non-food items.

Here is a list of items that your EBT does not cover:

  • Gift baskets (if the food part of the gift basket is less than 50% of the total price)
  • Ice cream cone/sundae
  • Livestock (for example, live animals or birds)
  • Cakes (that are more than 50% non-edible)
  • Toilet paper

How to Check Ohio Food Stamps Card Balance

There are three ways to check your Ohio EBT Direction Card balance.

Option 1 – Via Phone

Call the Ohio EBT Card phone number at 1-866-386-3071. The hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Option 2 – Online

You can check the balance online through the Connect EBT website.

Option 3 – Using the Last Transaction Receipt.
